Catharsis. There are some situations that make it difficult for you to say something even though you really want to. Sometimes we think some things are better left unsaid. Or sometimes we regret not telling someone something at a specific moment and it still bugs you. Writing can help you clarifying thoughts. It makes you at least move on a little and let things go by getting into it more. The act of writing a letter even though you are not actually sending the letter to the person you wrote the letter to could be surprisingly very therapeutic. In order to do that, I made a program using Max/MSP and assigned each letter with different musical notes. I asked people to write letters to those who they wanted to talk to but couldn't and I later collected the letters. For performance, I type in a letter on my laptop and as I type, the letter becomes sound as a way of letting go.
